Sacred Frankincense Therapeutic Grade™ Essential Oil
Sacred Frankincense Essential Oil (Boswellia sacra) comes from the Boswellia sacra frankincense tree and is distilled at the Young Living distillery in Oman. Sacred Frankincense is ideal for those who wish to take their spiritual journey and meditation experiences to a higher level.
Historical Data: Also known as "oliganum" or "Oil from Lebanon" the name frankincense is derived from the Medieval French word for "real incense". Frankincense is considered the "holy anointing oil" in the Middle East and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. It was well known during the time of Christ for its anointing powers and was one of the gifts given to christ at his birth. Frankincense was valued more than gold during ancient times, and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it. Frankincense is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, Ebers Papyrus (dating from sixteenth century BC), an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes. Anciently, the Chinese used frankincense liberally.
"In ancient Egypt, the priests and priestesses at the healing Temple of Hathor at Dendera both taught and administered the Sacred Science of essential oils. This knowledge, which was handed down by the priest/initiates for over 5,000 years is recorded on the walls of Dendera Temple. Some people believe that Jesus and Mary Magdalene participated in the Mystery School as taught at Dendera and learned the magic of the esoteric anointing oils. The Egyptian Blue Lotus, Frankincense and Myrrh, as well as spikenard, galbanum, and rose were all treasured for their spiritual properties. They were kept in treasuries and guarded as fiercely as gold. There is an outer building at Dendera called the Sanatorium, where the initiates were anointed with oils by the priests in order to experience prophetic and oracular dreams. The Sanatorium was later used as a center, where holy water was mixed with essential oils, amulets and crystals and used for bathing to relieve physical, mental and emotional distress. The Greeks, and later the Romans, adopted this practice and carried it into Celtic Britain and Gaul, and the idea of the "spa" was born." (Information courtesy of Mary Lomando)

There are several varieties of Frankincense trees and therefore varieties of Frankincense Resin, but Young Living uses only the purest resin and I, "Gary", know the differences between them all. We chose the very best resin that has been harvested properly and then distilled properly. There are many Frankincense resins, but most grades are only good enough for perfumes, yet many companies use them as essential oils and claim they are pure when indeed they are not. There is not a pure Frankincense that is sold in the U.S.! EXCEPT FOR YOUNG LIVING DUE TO GARY YOUNG'S QUEST FOR THE BEST... WE ARE THE ONLY COMPANY WITH THE BEST!
We, Young Living, now have our own distiller in Oman... never before has Frankincense has been shipped from Oman and we are now doing it. Young Living is the only company that has proven, tested, pure Frankincense oil. We distill our Frankincense Boswellia carteri in Kenya and Spain.

Notes from Gary Young's Travels and Research on Frankincense
Because of his travels, Gary Young has immersed himself in the study of frankincense. Here, Gary recounts some of this precious substance's legendary history.
Frankincense was anciently associated with longevity. For instance: In the tales of Alexander's adventures in India at the oracle of the sun and the moon, the Indian guardians of the oracle lived in a bower of sacred trees, which wafted the aroma of frankincense and balsam. They lived on pure water, balsam, and frankincense; a diet on which they had thrived for 300 years.
Legend also tells about Adam having been given gold, frankincense, and myrrh by God as a consolation for having lost paradise. According to the legends, he hid these gifts safely high in the mountains where they were treasured by Noah after the waters of the flood had receded. These sacred gifts were said to be passed down from generation to generation and kept carefully until the time came that they were to be brought to the newborn Jesus.
As early as 2800 BC, frankincense was carried either north to Mesopotamia or west to the Red Sea. There it was loaded on boats bound for Egypt where it was valued as an offering worthy of the gods. The Egyptian Book of the Dead considered incense far more than a ceremonial trapping. Frankincense was believed to enhance the afterlife journey of the deceased using the words of the ritual pyramid text: "A stairway to the sky is set up for me that I may ascend on it to the sky. And I ascend on the sense of the great sensing, frankincense."
Of all the ancient scripture oils, frankincense has the greatest story and the longest history—widely regarded as the most powerful aromatic substance in ancient times. The writings of Ptolemy comment that the small fragments that crumble off of the worked frankincense lumps as well as the frankincense dust and powder were called manna.
Many other uses of frankincense throughout the ages appear in ancient records. The early physicians described the properties of frankincense as being hot, dry, astringent, detergent, and extractant. Childbirth was protected by fumigation of frankincense and fresh frankincense was traditionally used in poultices and plasters to treat a wide variety of skin lesions. The gum was made into pills for a wide variety of problems.
I have walked ancient paths where caravans carried resin from the precious frankincense tree that grows from the limestone rocks, cliffs, and mountain slopes. A scrubby, twisted, deformed tree that lives 10 months of the year without water, yet yields this rich life-giving resin that for 3,000 years commanded a price 5 to 10 times higher than gold. I traveled throughout Africa collecting resins from the many varieties of frankincense, including Kenya, and visited the neglected land of Somalia collecting the carteri and the frereana varieties. This is the only place frankincense grows, unlike stories of it growing in Oman that are not true. You cannot miss this convention (2010) to see the documentary on the truth about frankincense! You'll learn why it was such an expensive commodity that Nero, the emperor of Roman Empire, wanted to pave the streets with it. This is your opportunity to learn about the different species of frankincense and hear from Arabian experts, PhDs, medical doctors, etc., talk about the latest discoveries. I will be sharing with you all of my experiences and discoveries.
"Boswellia sacra – I hope my readers can understand the joy that filled my heart at convention as I saw a dream come true. For 15 long years, I have traveled to the Middle East in search of the most precious frankincense essential oil of all: Omani hojari. At the 2010 Young Living Grand Convention it was my great honor to place this treasured oil in distributors' hands.
"Omani hojari is beloved of Omani royalty and the royal family of Saudi Arabia. It grows in the Dhofar region of Oman. In meetings with trade officials in the Ministry of Agriculture in Salalah, Oman, I learned that the only species of frankincense that grows in the kingdom of Oman is Boswellia sacra. This species has a higher content of the constituent alpha pinene than frankincense oil from Boswellia carteri, even though both varieties carry frankincense's therapeutic power.
"Because Young Living has established two distilleries in Oman and fulfilled all Omani government requirements, for the first time in modern history frankincense is being exported from Oman. REAL Omani hojari!
"At the Young Living Product Expo at the Young Living convention, distributors swarmed the single oil booths and were thrilled with the new frankincense oil from Oman: Sacred Frankincense. Young Living staff who shared samples of the oil reported that our distributors were surprised by the lighter, sweeter scent of Boswellia sacra and many actually experienced its uplifting, spiritual effect. I am gratified to know that prayer and meditation for thousands of Young Living distributors will now be enhanced thanks to the use of Sacred Frankincense.
"My heartfelt thanks to the Young Living distributors who so warmly embraced this new Young Living essential oil!" — Gary Young
From Young Living's 2010 Convention
Burning the Frankincense sacra resin was a tradition of people for 10,000 years. Ancient people were closer to God and lived their religion 24/7. And Frankincense was part of their everyday lives. The smoke coming from the burning of the resin assesses the emotions working on sadness and anxiety. The people of old used it to purify their clothing and bedding getting rid of (killing) sand fleas, lice, ticks, mold and bacteria.
Gary stated that what Young Living is doing in Oman is his "Dream". To be able to:
- Collect resin from location…knowing you are collecting the resin at the right time and to get all components from the resin in the EO.
- Distill resin on location
- To know we have the purest quality of resin available.
- Knowing then that we have the purest quality of oil possible.
The 3rd cut of resin from the Frankincense tree is the better resin. Collection of the resin must be a sustainable process; we don’t want the trees destroyed.
Emotions play a part in the degeneration of our bodies, our emotions. Frankincense plays an important part in repairing our emotional state.
Frankincense is too beautiful to leave in the bushel basket any longer. Frankincense was the first oil appointed by God himself. — D. Gary Young
Gary talked to us about a Legend on the first day of convention about the old people in Oman and surrounding areas told him. When God put Adam and Eve out of the Garden He gave them 3 things.:
3. Balsam (also known as Gold)
God created different plants for different countries. Palo Santo is the Frankincense for the America's. Frankincense is oil for the old country.
We now have partners that do the distillation of Frankincense. One in Spain who has been with us for a long time and one in Kenya. And now we are the first company to distill in Oman, our Sacred Frankincense which is from Boswellia sacra. It is the rarest and most sought-after aromatic in existence. A deeper spiritual connection.
Gary reviewed the grading of Frankincense and the different species of Frankincense. To our competition he said "their oils are not even a good joke''.
Gary has spent many years (15 plus), in his quest for knowledge and finding the most perfect qualities of Frankincense. Now Young Living has two Frankincense oils: Boswellia carteri, the one we are used to and Boswellia sacra the new one. Now we have both. Our labs in France, Utah and Ecuador are set up for testing and share results. No company in the world has better testing than Young Living. ''We don't tell you it is a good oil, we prove it'', D. Gary Young. (The Frankincense which many of other companies use is of poor quality and is more of a perfume grade and has no therapeutic value) — Notes courtesy of Richard and Shauna Dastrup.
