Australian Blue™ Essential Oil Blend from Young Living Essential Oils

Australian Blue Essential Oil BlendAustralian Blue™ Essential Oil Blend is a powerful, aromatic essence that unites ancient aboriginal wisdom with today's scientific knowledge about essential oils to uplift and inspire the mind and heart. This exotic essential oil blend has sweet, earthy undertones responsible for its calming and stabilizing effects.

Wellness: This Australian Blue™ blend includes a rare Australian aromatic called blue cypress, a part of the aboriginal pharmacopeoia for thousands of years. Distilled from the wood of Callitris intratropica, the Northern Cypress Pine, which supports the immune system. Its aromatic influence uplifts and inspires while simultaneously grounding and stabilizing.

Historical Information: Australian Blue Cypress (Callitris intratropica) is a beautiful conifer tree with naturally blackened bark, a member of the Southern Conifer family, and the official fragrance of the Sydney 2000 Olympic games. Nature is such a wonderful thing; if you were a termite, you wouldn't like this tree at all!!! The tree contains matrinic acid, which tastes horrible to our friendly termites. The leaves of the Blue Cypress tree also contain a natural insect repellant.

The Australian Blue Cypress tree grows in Northern Australia, particularly around the Northern Territory. It was originally used as timber for Darwin's houses, and as such there were many plantations made within an 80km radius of Darwin. However, all of that changed after Cyclone Tracey hit Darwin in 1974. This Cyclone was the worst in recorded history in Australia, being a Category 4, and it demolished (or seriously damaged) 70% of Darwin's houses. In 1978, the House of Representatives "wrote off" the Blue Cypress plantations, deeming that this was not the most suitable wood to use for construction in Darwin.

The plantations, many of which were planted around 1968, then stood unused for many decades. In 1994, one of the Government contractors was employed to clear some of the Blue Cypress trees, and he found that he was healing quickly and with little infection from any of his scrapes and cuts. This began his own journey of studying and researching the blue cypress tree. Since that time, he has begun distilling these plantation trees for their Blue Cypress oil, and he now has an exclusive arrangement with Young Living for the oil that he produces. Yes, there are other suppliers of Blue Cypress oil in the marketplace, however Young Living likes to partner with suppliers so that they can ensure that the oils meet their high standards in every step of production.

A group of Australian Young Living members (myself included) recently visited Darwin, to visit the Blue Cypress farm and distillery. What an awesome trip!!!! Let me tell you first about the distillation process, and then I want to share what this oil can do.

Distillation of Australian Blue Cypress:
There are about 820 hectares of Blue Cypress trees available to our distiller, and this produces 15 to 20 tonnes of essential oil per annum on a 30 year rotation. This meets with the ISO sustainable supply levels required for sustainable farming. Once logged, the wood is allowed to dry out, and this can take up to 6 months. If it is left too long on the ground, the insects begin to bore into the wood. Our distiller uses only the bottom 50% of the tree, because the quantity and quality of oil reduces when the upper branches are used.

The tree is then chipped, and it's these wood chips that are steam distilled for 50 to 70 hours, using a steam temperature of 100 degrees Celsius in order to preserve the 160 or more individual chemical components that are present in this essential oil in the plant. The still is 301 stainless steel – there is no copper at all to touch the oil as this affects the quality of the oil. Each batch of wood chips yields some 12 to 15 kg of essential oil. A post-distillation filtration process is then used, before the oil is bottled.

The oil itself is quite blue, as the result of a catalytic reaction between the bark and the hardwood. It contains up to 30% Guaiol as its major constituent. Guaiol has many uses in wound healing and as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent.

The oil has been tested for toxicity, and its LD50 was more than 2 litres per adult, meaning that it's an extremely safe oil to use.

Common Uses of Australian Blue Cypress:
Our distiller provided us with the following information on Blue Cypress oil, and its benefits. It is:

I then did my own research on the oil, and came up with the following:

According to Mark Webb, author of Bush Sense, this "clear, deep cobalt blue oil... is mostly sesquiterpenoid based [Artemis adds: sesquiterpenes are a molecule which carries oxygen around the body, and to the brain].... " Mark goes on to say that "Anecdotal data, has shown the oil to have good anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties against allergic hives, insects (like sandfly, bee, wasp, mosquito), rheumatoid arthritis, general joint pain and swelling. It has also been shown to be an anti-irritant, soothing nappy rash and reducing erythema in a small trial. The oil exhibits anti-viral properties, being particularly effective against common warts (verruca), shingles (herpes zoster) and cold sores (herpes simplex). The oil also has been used for burns where it has significantly reduced the healing time and pain associated with the injury... The Tiwi people of Bathurst and Melville Islands (NT) have used Australian Blue Cypress for thousands of years as a skin wash for sores and cuts, to soothe abdominal cramps, as an analgesic and an insect repellent." Mark then shares his person experience, stating that, "I have found Australian Blue Cypress oil particularly useful for grounding patients that are flighty, nervous or emotionally distraught. The calming, reassuring effect of this oil is immediate and long lasting, like it scent."

Although not currently sold as a single oil by Young Living, Australian Blue Cypress oil is a key ingredient in three of Young Living's blends: Australian Blue™, BrainPower™ and Highest Potential™. (This information courtesy of Artemis, a distributor in Australia)
